The Variety in Ferret Breeds

The variety of ferret breeds available these days is unfathomable. Each breed is distinctive in its color based on where the particular breed originates from geographically. Breeders have crossed different varieties and established in-between colors and variety of breeds. Primarily, there are four types of colors that ferrets come in. These being – Albino, Dark- eyed white color or DEW-as it is called, Sable – a dark chocolate and Silver. We can broadly classify the ferret breed as below:

Albino – all white with pink or red eyes
Badger or Shetland – White bib, white feet
Blaze – Resembles a silver mitt, has a white strip below the head
Black eyed white – Total white fur with only black eyes
Butterscotch – Torso, legs, tail butterscotch, fur under-belly fur white or cream
Cinnamon – Rare and is reddish brown outer fur, white or cream fur under-belly fur
Hooded – Resembles a raccoon by the face
Panda – Dark legs, white feet and white or cream under-belly fur
Roan – White and dark interwoven guard hairs
Sable – Dark guard hairs, face resembles a raccoon, under-belly fur is white, beige or cream
Siamese – Body fur in light shades, legs and tail dark fur
Silver mitt – White face, white feet and under-belly fur white or cream
Spotted and striped – White body fur with black eyes with a dark strip on their back

A lot of people like to have albino ferrets as they have an artistic bent of mind. Mostly albinos have a white coat, pink nose and red eyes. However, there are some which have dark blue or black eyes. Albinos are known to have sight and hearing problems. However, this does not stop anybody from choosing the albino ferret for a pet. All ferret breeds are exciting to own and make great companions regardless of their breed.

Cross breeding ferrets has established a variety of colors and new breeds. Probable pet owners now have a wide choice of colors and types of ferrets which will suit their taste of matching their ferret pet to their home environment or carpet color. The nose of the ferret also varies in color based on the breed they come from. Their nose color varies being between black, brown and pink while the shape is being between t-outline, splotched and so on.

It would be a tough choice for prospective ferret pet owners to choose one single color. However, with mixed breeds available it is not difficult to choose one.
